AC picks up bragging rights

The Augusta Christian boys and girls basketball teams picked up a pair of bragging rights wins over in-county, private-school rival Augusta Prep during the weekend.

Augusta Christian's boys rolled to a 73-53 win Saturday night. The Lady Lions had little trouble in a 77-42 home victory.

Lady Lion senior Casey Brush poured in 21 points on the night, while starters Lynlee Satcher and Whitney Waters each added 14 points.

"It's their size," Augusta Prep girls basketball coach Jeremy Burden said. "We played a good first half, but the Casey girl was just too strong inside."

The Lady Cavalier loss was the second of the weekend and sixth straight. Burden said leading scorer Laura Kopald has been limited during those six games because of a hamstring injury and she missed this weekend's play because of a family vacation.

Augusta Christian's boys continued their strong first half of the season with a 73-53 win over Augusta Prep. It was the second win of the weekend for the Lions, who knocked off Greenwood a day earlier.

The Lions are now 8-1.

Long-range win

The 3-point line was all Greenbrier needed in a 73-57 win over Cross Creek on Saturday. The Wolfpack boys nailed 10 3-pointers in the game including five long-range shots from junior Nolan Belcher. Four of Belcher's 3-pointers came in a span of five minutes in the second half when Cross Creek let the Wolfpack offense run the exact same play which ended with Belcher open in the corner. His final shot to start the fourth quarter found nothing but net and gave Greenbrier a 58-38 lead.

Speaking of long range

Harlem junior Kacee Camp awakened the crowd at Evans on Friday night with a 30-foot jump shot that found the basket at the buzzer to end the first half. Camp finished with nine points, but Evans survived with a 37-36 win.

Living on the edge

Lakeside's love for close games continued over this past weekend. The Lakeside boys came up two points short against Washington-Wilkes on Friday with a 64-62 loss. The Lady Panthers also lost a heartbreaker with a 53-49 overtime defeat at the hands of Westside.
