Christmas on display

Posted: Sunday, December 10, 2006

Family: Gene and Clay English

Location: 3622 Lake Shore Drive, Martinez

Directions: From Evans, take Washington Road east toward Augusta, turn left on Baston Road, then left on Lake Shore Drive.

What the display includes: A Christmas trail with thousands of lights, a life-size Christmas village, an extensive Christmas figurine collection along the trail, Manger scenes, horse and buggy and two Model T Fords.

Why do you set up the light display each year and for how many years have you done it?

"We've done it for six years with a walk-through," Clay said. "We do it for the enjoyment of the kids, basically. You meet a lot of new people that way."

Have you ever gotten comments on your display?

"My nephew came last year from Kentucky and he said, 'You're crazy to do all this hard work,'" Gene said. "He made the first trip around the yard with the first group and a little kid picked up something and he said, 'When I saw the look on his face, it's well worth everything you do.'"

What is your favorite part of the light display?

"I just enjoy putting it up for the kids," Gene said. "It keeps me busy. I'm 77 years old and I've got to stay busy ... and we work together."

Other than your own, what is your favorite light display?

"We used to go to Crawfordville," Gene said.

"Actually, that was the inspiration for the walk-through (display)," Clay said.
