Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and usually I write a column letting the readers know what I'm thankful for in sports. Well, this year I decided to change it up a bit.
We really did not have a Thanksgiving Grinch - until now. Here are several things that, on this Thanksgiving, I am not thankful for at all.
- BCS still won't budge
They have to know that their system has numerous flaws. However, they cannot admit they are wrong and because of their stubbornness we remain stuck with no playoff in college football. So I am certainly not thankful for the BCS.
- Chris Rose
I am not sure if I'm the only one to feel this way, but I can't stand this guy. Rose is host of The Best Damn Sports Show on Fox among other things. He seems like such a pompous jerk to me. (Harsh? Maybe, but it is not-so-Thankful Day). I just want to jump through the television and mess up his hair. He loves to verbally berate everyone, but when the other hosts poke fun at him, he goes nuts. Chris, quit taking yourself so seriously. I am not thankful for Chris Rose.
- The behavior of college athletes
Guys, quit getting arrested. It seems like the entire college football off-season is spent reading police reports. I realize these guys are young and can certainly make mistakes, but enough is enough. Tennessee had an almost Cal Ripken Jr.-like streak of consecutive weeks with at least one player arrested. And it is not the only team in which this is the case. It is in every region in this country, and it is sad. Players have a responsibility to their teammates, family, coaching staff and their universities, and many of them act as though they couldn't care less. I am not thankful for these low-lifes.
- Fair-weather fans
This one is a personal pet peeve. And you guys know who you are. In the pre-season, University of Georgia fans clamored for Mark Richt to play true freshman Matt Stafford. Stafford quickly earned the starting job, but after some early struggles, Dawg fans were ready to ship him back to Texas. And they were not very happy with coach Richt, either. They forgot that he has been the program's savior. He led UGA to its first SEC title in 20 years, and he has averaged more than 10 wins per season since taking the job.
And UGA fans are not the only ones guilty of this. I am all for being a fervent follower of your team, but leave the personnel issues to the coaches and root them on, win or lose. I am most definitely not thankful for fair-weather fans.
- Bryant Gumbel
Gumbel is a longtime broadcaster and the host of Real Sports on HBO. He is also one of the people I dislike most on the planet. When Martha Burk was on her crusade against Augusta National, Bryant trumpeted her cause, all the while being a member of an all-male golf club himself. Rather than just reporting on stories (which he is good at, by the way), he finds it necessary to try to give us his extremely liberal slant on each piece he does. Bryant, leave your opinions at the door and simply gives us the facts, sir.
I am not very thankful that Bryant Gumbel is on television.
Now, these are minor complaints, but someone has to play the role of Thanksgiving Grinch.
