Area athletes sign letters of intent

The early signing period for several sports begins today with many local athletes scheduled to announce their colleges of choice by signing National Letters of Intent this week.

Today, Greenbrier seniors Jeff Rowland and Brandon Cumpton will sign to play baseball at Georgia Tech and Evans senior Matt Clark will sign to play basketball at The Citadel.

On Friday, Greenbrier softball player Tiffany Blackburn will sign with North Georgia.

Evans volleyball player Aidan Yeager and swimmer Nicole Moody also will sign National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.

Augusta Prep wins volleyball tourney

The Augusta Prep volleyball team recently won the 2006 GISA Class AAA state championship weekend as a team. On Wednesday, the GISA recognized the Lady Cavaliers' individual accomplishments.

Six Augusta Prep volleyball players - Karen Filpus-Luyckx, Paige Guthrie, Mary Beth Horton, Kelley Toney, Nicole Abbott and Laura Kopald - were named to the All-Region 4-AAA Team, while Horton, Toney, Abbott and Kopald were also named to the All-State Team.

Augusta Prep head coach Rich Bland was named Region 4-AAA Coach of the Year and GISA Class AAA Coach of the Year.

The Lady Cavaliers finished the season with a 19-3 record and the first state volleyball title in school history.
