Evans woman charged with shoplifting, battery
An Evans woman was arrested at her home Tuesday after deputies say they linked her vehicle to a description given by a store manager as the one used in a shoplifting incident.
Bobbie Lee Herndon, 29, of the 2500 block of Grier Circle, was charged with one count of felony shoplifting and one count of simple battery. She was released late Tuesday from the Columbia County Detention Center after posting a $3,700 bond.
A manager of the Kohl's on Washington Road told deputies she saw a woman enter a fitting room with a cart of items then exit the fitting room wearing different clothes and carrying a purse and a leather coat that she did not previously have. The manager told deputies she followed the woman out of the store, where the woman got into a silver Chevrolet Cavalier.
Deputies found the vehicle and placed Herndon into custody. She was later identified by the manager as the suspect.
Two Augustans arrested for criminal trespass
An Augusta couple was arrested at a Martinez discount store Tuesday on criminal trespass charges.
William Carlton White, III, 41, and his wife, 44-year-old Laurie Anne White, both of the 2400 block of Lumpkin Road, were released from the Columbia County Detention Center late Tuesday after posting $1,100 bond each. Managers of the Kmart on Washington Road told deputies that the couple had been warned not to enter the store because of a prior incident.
The husband was seen entering the store at about 5:30 p.m. and managers called police.
Martinez man accuses acquaintance of stealing
A Martinez man told deputies Monday that an acquaintance cashed an inheritance check and used the money to purchase goods without his permission.
The 30-year-old man, from the 300 block of Applecross Drive, told deputies he tried to cash the check for $23,640 in July, but was unable to and gave it to his acquaintance, a 28-year-old woman of the same address. The man told deputies the check was cashed at the Rack and Grill on Old Petersburg Road in Martinez on Aug. 2 without his permission.
The man said the woman has since purchased items with the money and refuses to surrender the cash or the goods to him.
