Greenbrier's coaching staff knew they would count heavily on tailback Freddie Jones this season. He showed flashes of brilliance late last season when he took over running duties for Reggie Rice (now redshirted at The Citadel).
However, even they could not have foreseen the performances Jones has turned in during the past couple of weeks.
First, Jones was virtually unstoppable against rival Evans on Sept. 22. He amassed nearly 300 all-purpose yards, rushing for 183 yards on 29 carries and catching five passes for 112 yards.
His elusive running on a screen pass in the closing seconds (on a play where he appeared to be tackled for a loss) set up the 'Pack's game-winning score.
Just to prove that performance was no fluke, Jones dazzled the home crowd again Sept. 29 with 185 yards rushing and three touchdowns on only 15 carries as the 'Pack blasted Richmond Academy, 37-14.
In Greenbrier's three victories, Jones has more than 450 yards rushing and seven rushing touchdowns. The senior is among the area leaders in rushing yards and touchdowns and is on his way to a huge season.
Tournament of Wishes grows bigger, better
For the fifth consecutive year, I am helping coordinate the Tournament of Wishes Golf Event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the past four years we have raised more than $100,000.
Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. The average cost of each wish is in excess of $5,000, so the organization could not survive without events such as ours.
In the past this has been a one-day event with a golf tournament followed by live and silent auctions. This year the event has expanded greatly. All the festivities will get under way on Tuesday night, with the live and silent auctions, dinner and concert featuring national recording artist Ty Herndon all taking place at The Country Club Dance Hall and Saloon. That will be followed by the golf tournament at The River Golf Club on Wednesday. Come join in the fun for this terrific cause.
