Coaches poll finds 10th place for Evans

For the third time this season, the Evans volleyball team defeated region rival Lakeside in a 2-0 sweep this past Tuesday. The Region 3B-AAAA win wasn't the biggest news of the day for the Lady Knights, however.

On Tuesday, the most recent coaches poll placed Evans in a tie for 10th place in the state rankings.

Evans coach C.C. Armstrong said the volleyball state ranking is the first in school history.

"We've never had it. The first time we went to state was four or five years ago. We were a Cinderella team that put out all the Atlanta teams except one. So we were pretty much unknown," she said.

With a 21-1 overall record entering Thursday's matches against Butler and Aquinas, Evans is well-known this season. In area competition, Evans remains the only undefeated team in the subarea standings with a perfect 5-0 record. The most recent area win was Tuesday's 25-22, 25-12 win over Lakeside.

In the two-game match, Evans seniors Aidan Yeager and Brittany Gray each recorded 10 kills. Senior Katie Roon, who leads the team in assists, didn't disappoint with 15 assists in the match.

The Lady Knights' only remaining area match is against the Academy of Richmond County Thursday.

Even if Evans loses that match, the Lady Knights have clinched the subarea regular-season championship and will enter the area tournament Oct. 14 as the No. 1 seed.
