Sex offender charged with failing to re-register

An Evans man has been arrested for failing to update his residency on the state's sex offender registry after telling the Columbia County Sheriff's Office he was moving out of the county.

William Allen Cummings, 33, with a last known address in the 900 block of Hunting Horn Way, faces a charge of sex offender movement, and was being held without bond at the Columbia County Detention Center.

Cummings told deputies Aug. 26 he was moving out of the county, but by Monday he had not updated his residency. Jail records indicate he was arrested Tuesday.

Cummings was convicted of child molestation in Richmond County, stemming from an incident in 1989, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections Web site.

He was released from Rivers State Prison near Hardwick, Ga., in October 2003, according to department records.

Man attempts escape, but is quickly recaptured

Columbia County sheriff's deputies say a Martinez man in custody Monday for outstanding warrants attempted to break loose but was quickly recaptured.

Eric D. McDaniels, 27, of the 3900 block of Old Trail Road, faces charges of theft by taking, criminal trespass and obstruction of a law enforcement officer and was being held Wednesday at the Columbia County Detention Center on $9,800 bond.

As McDaniels was led in handcuffs to a patrol car outside his home, the Martinez man pulled away from deputies. He was quickly tackled by a civilian who pinned McDaniels until deputies regained control.

Grovetown man arrested on forgery

A Grovetown man was arrested Tuesday after he deputies say he tried to use a fraudulent Social Security card to obtain a driver's license.

Miguel Martinez, 38, of the 300 block of Hazelnut Drive, faces charges of first degree forgery and making false statements or writings, and was being held without bond Wednesday at the Columbia County Detention Center.

A manager at the Georgia Department of Driver Services office on Evans to Locks Road in Evans told deputies that clerks determined a Social Security card that Martinez reportedly used was fake.

Richmond County pair arrested in shoplifting

A Hephzibah woman and an Augusta man were arrested Monday after they stole several items from a Martinez retailer.

April Danielle Harrison, 40, of the 3600 block of San Sabastian Drive, faces charges of shoplifting and obstruction of a law enforcement officer and was released Tuesday from the Columbia County Detention Center after posting $3,700 bond.

Tony Bolton, 42, of the 2400 block of Bahama Drive, is charged with shoplifting and was released Tuesday on $1,100 bond.

Employees of the Dollar General on Bobby Jones Expressway told deputies they witnessed the suspects enter the store with empty tote bags, which began to bulge with items as they went through the store.
