The Lions in brief

Posted: Wednesday, August 23, 2006

Head coach: Bruce Lane (fifth season)

Classification: SCISA Region 1-AAA

Stadium: Pride Valley

Colors: Red, white and black

2005 record: 12-1

2005 highlight: The Lions claimed the SCISA AAA state championship as senior Lee Banks rewrote the Augusta Christian record books with 20 touchdowns on 1,513 yards passing and 15 more scores on 1,164 rushing yards.

Last trip to postseason: 2005

Last region title: 2002

Breakout season: Senior Josh Whitaker is widely known for his bat and arm on the baseball diamond. In football, he's a tall wide receiver with hands that improved dramatically as the 2005 season went on. With last year's fellow receiver, Nolan Belcher, now gone, Whitaker is a lock as the No. 1 option in the Lion passing offense.

Player to watch: Junior Jay Harmon was just short of the 1,000 yards rushing mark in 2005. Don't be surprised to see the combination of Harmon at fullback and senior Kyle Meeks at running back translate into a pair of 1,000 yard seasons.

Strength: The Lions have more depth at the skill positions (especially quarterback) than any other team in the county. Tyler Bourdo and Josh McDaniel can both run the offense and the backfield looks strong with returners Harmon and Meeks.

Weakness: Complacency. There's a reason back-to-back state titles are rare.
