Chairs will aid cancer society

Posted: Wednesday, August 16, 2006

Sitting your toddler in time-out could help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

A hand-painted timeout chair is one of about 10 that will be part of a silent auction at the Sit on Cancer fundraiser. The red chair comes with a timer attached to the side.

"We have 10 local artists painting chairs, bar stools, children's chairs and occasional chairs," said Julie Tollison, the cancer society's community manager.

Artists include Karen Banker, Kathy Engler, Lillie Morris and Ann Smith.

The fundraiser, which will be held at Dunlap Studio, will have an art exhibit feel to it, Tollison said.

This is the first time the local chapter has held such a fundraiser, she said.

Tollison said she's hoping it will reach out to people who might not know the American Cancer Society's mission.

"We have the Relay for Life, and that reaches a certain group," she said. "We have the golf tournament, and that reaches another group. It's exciting to have something with the arts. They've been so receptive."

Because it will be a silent auction, it's difficult to gauge how much the event might raise, Tollison said.

"Whatever it brings in, we'll be happy with," she said.

The local American Cancer Society office serves about 10 counties, including Richmond and Columbia. For information, call (706) 731-9900.
