The rapidly growing and innovative Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, under the dynamic leadership of President George Duehring and Executive Director Gordon Renshaw, has announced its innaugural tennis tournament.

It will be an exciting and fun time for players and spectators alike. It will be held at Petersburg Racquet Club, which is owned by Craig Jones and Mark Reardon, two of the area's finest tennis professionals. The tournament will start on Thursday and run through the weekend.

From 5-8 p.m. Thursday, there will be a Chamber of Commerce "Tennis After Hours" with heavy hors d'hoeuvres. All members and participants are invited. From 6-7 p.m., there will be a friendly, competitive tennis match between two of our finest elected public officials. Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver will venture into the friendly confinces of Columbia County to compete against County Commission Chairman Ron Cross. The match will be refereed by Taylor Auto Group's Ann Taylor, who also is an avid tennis player.

In addition, there will be free tennis lessons from 7:15-8:15 p.m. for Chamber members, their employees and entrance in the novice/hacker division.

If you have not been to Petersburg Racquet Club lately, I'd recommend a visit. They have seven clay courts and eight hard-surface courts and an Olympic-size swimming pool. It is a beautiful facility, located off Furys Ferry Road on The Pass in Martinez. The owners and pros provide great lessons for young and old. Tennis, like golf, is a lifetime sport, but tennis is more affordable and keeps you in tip-top shape.

For more details on the tournament, call the Petersburg Racquet Club at (706) 860-9288, or the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce at (706) 651-0018. You can also enter online at www.prctennis.com. The deadline is 6 p.m. Monday.

Also, don't forget the fine sponsors: Comcast, MCG Medical Associates, Queensborough National Bank and Trust Co., Taylor Auto Group and 1 Hour Optical.
