Library offers murder mystery for teens

Posted: Sunday, July 23, 2006

Move over, Captain Jack Sparrow. Teenagers at the Columbia County Main Library will soon be able to experience their own pirate adventure.

From 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, a murder mystery night with a pirate theme will be held at the library for children between the ages of 12 and 18. The event is free.

Participants will solve The Case of Treasure and Treachery, in which they will figure out who murdered Captain William Kidd.

A pirate council meeting will be summoned to investigate the murder, and those who are not pulled for staging the parts will be jotting down notes to figure out the mystery.

Small prizes will be rewarded to those who guess the murder correctly, said Anita Patterson, the library's young adult librarian.

Patterson said the Murder Mystery Night is part of the Summer Reading program held at the library, and because the mystery night was a success last year it was decided it would be revisited.

"The new library has an increase in library use for young adults,'' Patterson said. "We expect better attendance than last year. Thirty-six people are registered, and we hope there will be more."
