Summer reading ends well

Magician scheduled to close out program

Posted: Wednesday, July 19, 2006

The finale to Columbia County's Summer Reading Program will be magic.

"He has performed at other libraries and comes highly recommended," said Pam Link, the children's librarian at the new Columbia County Library in Evans, referring to magician Chad Crews.

Crews, of Augusta, uses his alter ego, Sir Chadwick of the Boro, to fit the summer reading program's children's theme Once Upon a Time. His show includes music, live animals such as a dove and ball python, and magic.

Crews urges children to read and lets them know most of the magic tricks he performs he learned from reading books.

The magic show will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Euchee Creek Library on Euchee Creek Drive near Grovetown; and at 2 p.m. at the Columbia County Library on North Belair Road, in Evans.

"The main thing is to get people into the library and to see what we have to offer," Link said.

The summer reading program, which began May 19, ends Friday, July 28. Link said about 2,000 children received certificates for completing the program last year.

Already this summer, Link said, more than 1,400 school-age children have earned their certificates and prizes. Alice Goodman, a library assistant, said about 250 young adults, ages 13-17, also have received their certificates.

"We have a lot of participation," Link said.

As the program comes to an end this year, Link said, the regular storytimes at the Columbia County Library also will end, at least for a little while.

Until July 28, storytime will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10:15 a.m. for those age 2; 11 a.m. for preschoolers; and 2 p.m. for school-age children. Storytime for families will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

Link said the library is playing host to an embroidery class at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The class, for children ages 8-12, is being led by the local embroidery guild and should last less than two hours. The class is free, and all supplies will be provided.
