Sheriff's office should 'referee' Furys Ferry 'game'

Editor:

With the almost completion of Fury's Ferry Road, there seems to be a new game in town. While the origin, game rules and object of the game haven't been published, observation would indicate the following:

- Origin: Four years of waiting and waiting through road construction developed a need to make up for lost time, now.

- Game Rules: Ride the bumper of the car ahead of you. As soon as the road opens from two lanes to four lanes coming from South Carolina toward Washington Road, pass on both sides.

Exceed the posted 45 mph speed limit until you're stopped at the next light.

It would seem extra points are given if you do not obey traffic laws. For example, make a left turn into the right turn lane to avoid going around the concrete median that is closing off the entrance to Circle K at Evans-to-Locks Road. Or, if heading for South Carolina, after you pass the fire house, when three lanes merge into one, try to see who can be first to cut in from the far right "turn only" lane.

- Object of the Game: Get there first, ignore traffic laws, and show no consideration for other drivers.

Instead of raising taxes or floating bond issues for future projects, the county might want to consider having the sheriff serve as referee to this new game by calling a "foul" on drivers that do not believe in following traffic laws and issuing "penalty" tickets. We could all get a tax refund and still see the county projects completed.
