In recent weeks I have tried to keep readers updated on the many honors that have been bestowed on our county's top baseball players, including Josh Whitaker of Augusta Christian, who was selected to display his talents at the East Coast Showcase in Wilmington, N.C.
I also noted that Greenbrier's pitching duo of Brandon Cumpton and Nolan Belcher got a chance to battle for a spot on the USA Junior National Team at The Sunbelt Classic in Joplin, Mo.
Well, now Whitaker, Cumpton and Greenbrier center fielder Jeff Rowland will participate in the Team Georgia Showcase. This event brings together the top 100 baseball prospects in the state. Rowland and Cumpton have already been named to play this summer for Team Georgia, a team that features the top 20 seniors and rising seniors in the Peach State.
Whitaker and Evans super sophomore Kevin Millward have earned spots in the USA Baseball Showcase field of 100 and will be trying to impress the scouts in games and tournaments over the next several weeks. Between 40 and 50 Major Leagues scouts attend these games and various workout sessions.
The "Top 100" players will take the field July 8 at Kennesaw State, split into eight separate teams.
Good luck, guys. Make us proud.
