New principal hired
Columbia County school officials have announced that Edgar Caddell has been employed as the new principal of Martinez Elementary for the 1970-71 school year.
Caddell is now the head coach and athletic director at Garrett High School in Charleston, S.C.
Caddell earned his bachelor's degree from New Berry College and his master's from Appalachian State University.
Caddell is married with one child and will move to the area sometime after July 1.
Scholar named
Patricia Ann Frederick, Evans High School valedictorian, is one of four CSRA graduates to be selected as an Augusta College Faculty Scholar.
The four Faculty Scholars will attend Augusta College, financed by the new Augusta College Faculty Scholars Fund. The four-year award is the only one of its type at the college, as it is awarded solely on academic talent.
The fund was created by the faculty to curb the number of academically talented students who choose to attend college out of Georgia.
"Hopefully," Admissions Director John R. McNeal said, "this will help retain outstanding students in the Central Savannah River Area."
Earthquake relief
Arrangements are being made by CARE for an initial emergency shipment of $600,000 in relief supplies to be sent to the earthquake victims in Peru.
After consulting with the Peruvian Embassy in Washington, the International Assistance Agency today announced that William Rayman, CARE Mission Chief in Honduras, will arrive in Peru on Thursday morning to ascertain the needs on the scene.
