Karen and Al Britton are regular patrons at the Saturday Market on Broad.
"We enjoy it and support it. We want to see it grow and continue," Mrs. Britton said.
In its fourth year, Saturday Market on Broad has the feel of a European outdoor market, said Jennifer Walden, the market coordinator.
"It gives consumers the opportunity to buy fresh local, homegrown produce - stuff they can't get from a grocery store," Walden said.
Besides offering fresh products, there is a festival-type atmosphere with different activities each week, she said.
A magician will be at the market each week, Walden said. The first of two iron chef competitions with the Augusta Technical College Culinary Department was held Saturday. The second competition will be July 29 with a showdown of the two winners Aug. 26.
On June 17, there will be a gardening day and Celtic music and Kids' Day will be July 15.
Julie and David Moretz called visiting the market a weekend ritual that supports the growth of downtown Augusta.
"We always leave with something," Mrs. Moretz said.
New to the market is New Life Natural Foods, a business that has been in the area for 25 years.
"It seems like business is picking up each week. We have more and more people," said Mitchell Waters, who works the New Life booth. "Everyone loves the organic coffee, organic muffins and raw honey."
There also are items for pets at the market.
Many of the patrons who visit the market bring their dogs, which gave Margie and Jerry Maccario an idea for a booth at the market.
The couple makes homemade treats for their dog, Cookie, because she has allergies.
Cookie is the official taste-tester for the products, the couple said, and her favorite flavor is banana bark-scotti.
