Budget for schools nears $20 million
Columbia County Superintendent of Education Tucker Vaughn and the Board of Education have compiled a tentative budget for the upcoming school year in the amount of $19,398,862.87.
The budget, if approved, will include a 10 percent pay increase for all teachers.
"In reality," Vaughn said, "they will receive a 12 percent increase because they get one more in a year. The 2 percent every year is a built-in raise."
Instructional salaries will make up almost half of the proposed budget.
Also recommended in the budget is a 7 percent raise for all administrators.
Along with the 2 percent yearly raise, this would give administrators a 9 percent pay increase for the year.
This year's budget is up from the 1983-84 budget of $17,759,938.72.
State patrol cracks down on speeders
Citing rising death rates from excessive speeds and more motorists ignoring the 55 mph speed limit, the Georgia State Patrol is announcing a major statewide crackdown blasting throughout the summer.
Georgia's Public Safety commissioner, Col. Hugh Hardison, said the operation, dubbed "Fast Lane Blues," would be a special deployment of manpower at the local patrol level hitting traffic problem areas with two- or three-man special squads.
The result, said Hardison, would be a highly visible campaign utilizing radar, road checks and other eye-catching techniques aimed at slowing drivers who blatantly violate speed laws.
