Toilet-cleaning flap is needless

Posted: Friday, May 12, 2006

This letter is in response to the article in Wednesday's Augusta Chronicle concerning the 6-year-old boy who had to clean the toilet at River Ridge Elementary School ("Parents plan to fight racism in school after toilet incident").

First of all, did he soil the toilet? If so, then he should have cleaned it. My children, when they were younger, had to clean up after themselves. My son cleaned the toilet and the wall and floor around the toilet when he missed the target.

How is this degrading? I think it taught him to clean up after himself. How would another pupil have felt if he came in to use the bathroom and the seat/toilet was soiled?

Second of all, why is the president of the NAACP getting involved in this incident? He was quoted in the article as saying he did not think this was racially motivated.

Why was the teacher disciplined? I think she was right in the matter.
