Man charged in car theft, obstruction

An Augusta man was arrested Monday evening, accused of stealing a motorist's car and obstructing deputies.

Michael Anthony Wyatt, Jr., 23, of the 4800 block of Golden Leaf Lane, was charged with theft by taking an automobile and obstruction or hindering a law enforcement officer; he was released from the Columbia County Detention Center on Tuesday on $3,700 bond.

Wyatt was riding in the car of an Augusta woman. She told deputies he grabbed her steering wheel after saying he was not crazy, forcing the car to crash into a ditch near the intersection of Wrightsboro Road and Three Oaks Drive near Appling.

The wreck occurred at about 7:45 p.m.

A Harlem woman, who saw the wreck, told deputies that after she got out of her car to offer assistance, Wyatt got into her Chevrolet Equinox and tried to leave.

The witness told deputies she ran up to her vehicle and yelled at Wyatt, who jumped out and ran into nearby woods. Deputies tracked Wyatt with a dog after he would not comply with orders to stop.

Couple say someone fired weapon at them

An Evans man and an Augusta woman told deputies someone shot a weapon at them Tuesday evening at an Evans apartment complex.

The 22-year-old Evans man said he noticed what looked like the light of a laser pointer on the back of his girlfriend's shirt at about 10 p.m. as she was getting into his truck in the 600 block of Thoroughbred Lane.

The man went to the driver's side of his truck and heard a muffled sound and felt air pass his face.

The couple left and notified deputies but returned after being contacted by dispatchers.

The man told deputies he saw an old brown sedan parked several spaces down from his truck, with four or five males inside. While deputies were taking the man's statement, a car matching that description entered the complex.

The driver allowed deputies to search that vehicle, but they found no weapons.

Man reports attack outside of his home

A Martinez retiree told deputies that three men wearing ski masks assaulted him Tuesday night after he would not give the men money.

The 48-year-old man, of the 400 block of Old Evans Road, said he was sitting in front of his apartment at about 10 p.m., when a man wearing a ski mask approached him and demanded money.

After two other men wearing ski masks soon joined the first man, he told the men he did not have any money and offered them a cigarette instead. When he retreated to his apartment, he was hit on the back of the head with a closed fist, he told deputies.

Woman finds contraceptive in mailbox

A Grovetown woman told deputies Tuesday evening she found a used condom in her mailbox.

The 54-year-old said she found the contraceptive stuck between letters in the box.

Deputies, who responded to the home in the 500 block of South Old Belair Road, determined the substance inside did not appear to be semen, and they disposed of the condom and its contents.
