Field dedicated

The Martinez Volunteer Fire Department will dedicate their baseball field to the late Ed Richey on May 25, 1968. The field will then become the Ed Richey Field.

Richey was on the board of directors of the fire department and assistant fire chief, and a dedicated man, doing for his community since the fire department began on Oct. 15, 1960.

In January 1968, Richey was fighting a fire and suffered a stroke and cerebral hemorrhage, passing away shortly thereafter.Checks to schools

Charles M. Hale, principal of Martinez Elementary School, received a check for $25 from the Martinez Jaycettes president June Brown on Tuesday, as did Paul Davis, principal of South Columbia Elementary School.

The Martinez Jaycettes present a check each year to the Martinez schools from money they have made from their programs and projects.Wallace petitions

A petition drive has begun to get George Wallace on the ballot in Columbia County. Anyone who wishes to sign a petition may contact most any local business in the county or call Fred Moon.Bids wanted

The Columbia County Commission is requesting bids for the construction of one new voting booth at Evans, and additions to the existing voting booths at Harlem, Grovetown, Hazen and Sardis. Plans and specifications may be obtained at the Board of Commissioners office in Appling.
