'Hoppin' will wrap up plays at school

Children put in hard work on their bunny tale

The first-grade class of Brookwood Elementary School will present a musical Tuesday about finding one's place in life.

Get Hoppin', the final play of the school year, is a musical comedy about a stubborn bunny who refuses to hop, said Brookwood music teacher Johnny Carr.

The story follows Bunny Sue, whose siblings think she is spoiled and mean because of her stubbornness and her parents' refusal to force her to hop, Carr said.

One day, the young bunny ventures out on her own and meets many characters in a series of misadventures.

When Bunny Sue comes across fish, she longs to swim, and when she meets some birds, she yearns to fly, Carr said.

Her newfound friends try unsuccessfully to convince the bunny that she was destined to hop and play on the ground.

When she encounters a group of people picnicking and playing a radio, her feelings about hopping begin to change, Carr said.

"When she discovers the steady beat of the music, she discovers that hopping can be fun," he said.

Carr said the 120 first-graders in the play have practiced hard on their songs and choreography.

"They look really good," he said. "They're doing a good job and it's a real entertaining play for the whole family."

The first performance begins at 2:15 p.m. in the school cafeteria, and there is an evening performance at 7 p.m.
