Book signings

The grand opening festivities at the new Columbia County Library in Evans continue today, with book signings and talks from children's books author Carmen Deedy at 1 p.m., and best-selling novelist Terry Kaye at 3 p.m. The authors will appear in the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center.

Poetry month

In recognition of April as National Poetry Month, the Columbia County Literary Arts Guild will hold a celebration at 7 p.m. Monday as part of the grand-opening festivities at the new Columbia County Library. The event will include the presentation of awards for the winners of the sixth annual poetry month contest. For information, call (706) 868-3353.

Poetry workshops

Poetry workshops for pupils from grades 6-12 will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and from noon to 2 p.m. May 6. Participants will learn about poetry by using magazines and pictures, and conclude with a performance by the pupils. Participants should bring magazines and scissors. Last Chance Dance

Wednesday is the postmark deadline for ticket orders for The Last Chance to Dance, a reunion of the Evans High School graduating classes of 1978-82 on May 6 at the Evans Middle School Gymnasium. The dance is organized in recognition of the pending demolition of the school, and to raise funds for moving the school's historic stone pillars and arch.

Parent workshop

Keith Deltano, "The Teaching Comedian," will hold a free workshop for parents, How to Promote Abstinence in a Sex-Saturated World, at 6 p.m. Thursday at Savannah Rapids Pavilion. Deltano also will be speaking to Columbia County middle and high school pupils Monday-Thursday.

Deltano's visit is sponsored by the Children and Youth Coordinating Council, the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice and the Columbia County school system.
