Library is 'true example of great things,' but hours should reflect needs

Posted: Sunday, April 23, 2006

As residents of Evans for almost 13 years, my family and I were thrilled to see the new library finally opened to the public. It is a beautiful space and a true example of the great things that Columbia county is capable of on behalf of its citizens.

Because this space is for use of the citizens, I have to agree with David Sisler's April 19 letter concerning the hours of operation. The library is only open until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Most kids I know aren't home from after-school activities by then, much less able to make it to the library before closing time. And what about people who work? You may be leaving your office at 5 p.m., but too late if you need the library!

The weekends especially are important times for the library to be open. Saturday night is a perfect time for adults, families or students to gather at the library, have something to eat in the cafe, study or just read for fun.

It needs to be open until at least 10 pm, but currently it closes at 4 p.m. The hours on Sunday are even worse - only three hours.

Come on, Columbia county. This facility is funded with our tax money. Shouldn't the hours reflect what the families want and need? Let them hear from you.
