Lady Wolfpack defeats Lakeside

Greenbrier executes game plan perfectly

When the Greenbrier girl's soccer team takes the field, there's always a set game plan to follow.

In Tuesday's 2-0 win over rival Lakeside, the Lady Wolfpack executed that game plan to perfection.

"We harp on the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes of each half," Greenbrier girl's soccer coach Alex Heider said. 'We scored both our goals in that time-period tonight."

The Lady Wolfpack wasted no time in front of its home crowd against their cross-town rival. Senior Amanda Ness scored the first goal of the game with 32:05 left in the first half on a pass from junior Keri Wright.

Wright recorded her second assist of the game with 9:18 left in the second half when her cross to Jennifer Dye allowed the senior to find the bottom right corner of the net.

The two goals were the only scores Greenbrier could muster despite taking 16 shots on the night. Lakeside senior Emily Brandenburg kept the Lady Panthers in the game with 14 saves.

"We weren't intimidated when we came out, but it's tough to score on Emily," Wright said. "You have to shoot low because goal keepers sometimes have a hard time getting low."

The game plan worked and gave Greenbrier its second win of the season. The victory was also a pick-me-up after losing to AAAA No. 1 Marist just three days earlier.

"There's no telling how we could have come out tonight after losing to Marist Saturday," Heider said. "I'm satisfied with the effort."

Greenbrier wasn't the only team to get a win Tuesday. Lakeside's boys and Harlem's girls also found the win column.

The Lady Bulldogs earned a 7-0 victory at Clarke Central. After starting the season off with two straight losses, Harlem has bounced back to even its record at 2-2 and has outscored its two recent opponents 21-0.

Lakeside's Panthers remained undefeated Tuesday night with a 5-1 win against Westside. Tyler Bivens scored for the Panthers with three goals on the night while Brian Gross-Bias netted the other two. Goalkeepers Phillip Shackelford and Michael Combs combined for three saves and the 4-goal victory.
