More college signings

Harlem seniors Jamie Nevin and Tyrell Dyson, along with Aquinas senior Devin Newman, were added to the growing list of Columbia County athletes who have signed letters of intent to play at colleges.

Nevin, one of the top Lady Bulldog soccer players, will join Lakeside's Amanda Wade at Georgia College and State University next year, while Dyson signed with Erskine College. Newman, a resident of Evans and captain of the Aquinas girl's soccer team, signed with the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

Harlem senior Elissa Botts, the Lady Bulldogs' leading scorer against Hephzibah last week, did not sign a letter of intent but has made a verbal commitment to Georgia Southern University.

Augusta Christian JV Tournament

The Augusta Christian junior varsity boys basketball team claimed a JV championship last weekend in the junior varsity tournament at Hammond. The Lions defeated Cardinal Newman by double digits in the championship game.

Harlem wins 14-0

Just one day after losing to Greenbrier (AAAA preseason No. 7) by only two goals, the Harlem Lady Bulldogs responded with a 14-0 blowout win in a region match over Hephzibah on Thursday night. Senior Elissa Botts tallied four goals in the game while Jamie Nevin added three goals. Alana Dyson, Beyra Ortega and Whitney Martinez scored two goals each in the win. Megan Morgan also netted a goal.

Quarter Horse champ

Elizabeth Kay Smith, a sophomore at Greenbrier, and her horse, Sompin Luke N Gould, were recently notified by the American Quarter Horse Association of their fulfillment of the requirements for the title of Youth AQHA Champion. The award is the most recent of more than 30 Smith has won in her years of showing.

Player of the Week

Former Evans softball standout Heather Jones was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week for her play as a member of the Georgia College and State University softball team. During the 4-0 week for the Lady Bobcats, Jones batted 7-for-10 (.700) with two doubles, two home runs, five RBI and five runs.
