As reported 30 years ago in the pages of The Columbia News and The Martinez-Evans Times, Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1976:
Beale is new director
Charles Beale has been employed by the Columbia County Recreation Commission to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former Recreation Director Don Dearing. Beale was chosen over six other applicants.
A spokesman for the commission said that Beale is not a stranger to the commission. He was considered three years ago for the position when the job was first established, but was unavailable for full-time employment due to a commitment to the Marine Reserves. Since then he has been honorably discharged.
Beale takes the position with several years of experience in recreation, including most recently the directorship of the Jenkins County Recreation Commission.
Beale said he was happy to be in Columbia County and that he thinks the program has a lot of potential.
