Two Columbia County civic groups have moved or added a branch to serve residents of the Martinez-Evans area.
The Rotary Club of Columbia County West, which normally meets in Harlem, surveyed its members in the summer and has been holding weekly meetings at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, at 555 Hereford Farm Road in Evans, since early October, said David Titus, the club's secretary.
"With our location in Harlem, we were really a long way removed from the population of Columbia County," Titus said, adding that many club members are from other parts of Columbia County, west Augusta and Augusta.
"So we really were driving a long way out there to meet. We felt like we could be a lot more effective if we were a little closer in," he said.
Titus said the Rotary Club's Tuesday meetings are usually an invitation-only gathering, but anyone interested can call him at 860-2205.
The Augusta Lions Club isn't moving to Columbia County, but it is starting a branch club in the Martinez-Evans area.
"Things are moving this way," said Art Turner, an Augusta Lions Club member and club liaison for the new branch.
"Columbia County is growing, and the Lions Club does not have a presence in this area," he said.
The branch club will be an extension of the Augusta club, but with two of its own officers: a club coordinator and an assistant club coordinator. They will have the same duties of a club president and vice president but will also be members of the Augusta club's board of directors.
"A branch is almost like a committee," Turner said. "But it will be treated as a separate entity for the membership of the branch. It's almost like it is the Evans Lions Club, but it's not until they can get 20 active members. After 20, they can get their own charter."
Turner said anyone interested is invited to attend an informational meeting for the branch club at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wesley United Methodist Church at 825 North Belair Road in Evans.
The branch club meetings will be much more convenient for Augusta Lions Club members who live or work in Columbia County, said Turner, who lives in Columbia County.
Members of the Augusta club and new members are invited to join the branch club. For more information, call Turner at 860-6655.
