Wrestlers take first

The Greenbrier Middle School wrestling team will wrap up its inaugural season with a home meet Tuesday, but many of the junior Wolfpack wrestlers have already found success on the mat.

Three eighth-graders, Brandon Critell (116 pounds), Bubba Poole (137 pounds) and John Rice (160 pounds), all took home first place in their weight divisions at the Maroon and Gold Wrestling Tournament at Ninety Six, S.C., this past weekend.

Coach wins award

Augusta Prep assistant soccer coach Forrest Wimberly was awarded the 2005 NSCAA/Adidas High School Assistant Coach of the Year Award at the 59th annual NSCAA Awards Banquet on Jan. 20 in Philadelphia. Wimberly was one of four finalists from across the United States.

Wimberly, who has served as assistant coach for Doug Williamson, will take over the head coaching position, the school announced Wednesday.

Williamson left the school in January to devote more time to his soccer training career in Maryland.

Soccer rankings

The 2006 Georgia High School Preseason Soccer Rankings were released Monday. Greenbrier's boys are ranked No. 5 while the Lady Wolfpack are No. 7. The Evans Knights are ranked No. 6.
