Service members appreciate support from people like Margie Adams

I command the 17th Signal Battalion that has just returned to our home base in Germany following a rotation in Iraq. Barry Paschal's recent column in The News-Times mentioned the great things that Grovetown City Councilwoman Margie Adams has done for the deployed troops.

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you what a difference she made for our soldiers during our deployment. We received countless packages, and there is no doubt that Adams was the driving force behind making that happen. My battalion was spread out over hundreds of miles and in many locations; the life support was minimal at best. Receiving those packages made all the difference in the world for many of my soldiers.

We cannot begin to thank her enough. In all honesty, the support that we received from the American people, as a whole, has been overwhelming. Despite whatever political opinions people hold, the underlying message was that they supported us. Unless someone has been deployed in combat for any length of time, one cannot begin to understand just how important that message is.

On behalf of all of the soldiers in my unit, and, I am sure all of the service members who have been deployed, I thank Margie Adams and all of the American people who have and continue to support the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who slug it out on a daily basis as they carry out their duties across the globe.
