Chili Challenge

Downtown Harlem, in conjunction with the monthy first Saturday events, will hold the Mayor's Chili Challenge cook-off starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, with judging from noon-1 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded. For information, call 556-0401.

Adopt-a-Stream workshop planned

Columbia County Adopt-a-Stream will hold its certification Chemical Workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Martinez Columbia Fire Rescue Station on Oakley-Pirkle Road. Persons interested in joining this activity, or in getting annually recertified, should register by contacting John Graham to jopagr@comcast.net or 868-0296.

Tree recycling

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is accepting Christmas trees for recycling through Monday at Riverside Middle School on Furys Ferry Road.

Board meeting

The Columbia County Board of Education will meet in a special called session at 8 a.m. Thursday at Harlem High School. Among other items, trustees will vote on a new chairman and vice-chairman for the coming year.

Library gala

Columbia County Arts is sponsoring a black-tie fundraising gala for the new library and performing arts center. The event will be from 7-11 p.m. Jan. 21 a tthe new facility in Evans. Tickets cost $100. For information, call 863-3484.

Chamber meeting

The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce will hold its inaugural annual meeting at 6 p.m. Jan 23 at Savannah Rapids Pavilion. The vent will honor chamber volunteers and name a small business person of the year and the first Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Tickets to the event cost $35 for chamber members, $50 for non-members. For information, call 860-4735.

Second Sunday

Church of our Savior, at 4227 Columbia Road in Martinez, will hold its "Second Sunday" contemporary praise and worship service at 7 p.m. Sunday. For information, call 863-1718.
