The potential to lure retirees to Columbia County is boundless. We have a fantastic climate and a beautiful lake capable of being used for year-round fishing - and it is just now being developed to more fully utilize its resources.

The CSRA has so much to offer our northern brethren - including Canadians - that I wonder why anyone would live elsewhere. Dollar for dollar, retirees enrich a community many times over. They demand good health care, an active lifestyle, low taxes, low cost of living, low crime rates, affordable housing and good neighbors.

The five-county pact surrounding Clark's Hill Lake offers an opportunity to place this region as the No. 1 destination for retirees from around the country. I sincerely hope that the candidates being interviewed for Columbia County's new tourism position have some background and knowledge in the recruitment of elderly persons.

With the issue of Fort Gordon's status settled, military retirees will welcome the opportunity to utilize their military entitlements. Let's make our community their new home by aggressively pursuing these retirees.
