At any other Greenbrier High School football game, Kara Knight would be along the sidelines, cheering her team on as a member of the varsity cheerleading squad.

But at Friday's homecoming game, Kara traded her cheerleader uniform for a floor-length sparkling black gown and was named the 2005 homecoming queen.
"I did not expect that in any way whatsoever," Kara said after she spent nearly the entire third quarter posing for pictures and hugging family and friends.
After Kara's name was called, the cheerleading squad went wild and eagerly waited to center Kara in a group photo. But by the end of the third quarter, Kara had changed clothes and joined the squad on the sidelines.
Kara is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, yearbook staff, Spanish Honor Society, HOSA and the volleyball club. In addition to varsity cheerleading, Kara also plays varsity soccer. After graduation, Kara plans to attend the University of Georgia to study teaching.
But for Kara, winning the crown was just the icing on the cake. She said she loved spending spirit week and the different activities such as pep rallies and dress-up days with the other girls, including first runner-up Brittany Leverett, escorted by her father, Mike Leverett, and second runner-up Ashley Arthur, escorted by her father, Neal Arthur, and her stepfather, Mark Walls.
"They were all so sweet," Kara said. "They were the nicest bunch of girls. That was the best part of the week. I had so much fun with them."
Other members of the homecoming court were Natasha Bailey, escorted by her father, Michael Bailey; Tricia Brands, escorted by her father, Michael Brands; Jessica Limper, escorted by her father, Ed Limper; Amanda Ness, escorted by her father, David Ness; Lauren Tadlock, escorted by her father, William Tadlock; Amanda Glover, escorted by her father, Dean Glover; and Melody Wallace, escorted by her father, James Wallace.
