Watson-Brown scholarship recipients

The following residents from Columbia County have been named recipients of a Watson-Brown Foundation scholarship for 2005-06: Alexander N. Abate, Robert A. Arthur, Victoria L. Balcer, Sagar P. Bapat, Shivan P. Bhatt, Janki V. Chudgar, Erika A. Funderburg, Sana F. Hashmi, Zachary M. Strother, Jonathan M. Williams and Bilal Yousufzai, all of Martinez; Jeanette E. Bowman and Mark A.S. Hanna, both of Grovetown; Ryan E. Clark, Samuel M. Gaston, Stephen M. Goldman, Benjamin R. Gooding, Lawrence J. Gregory, Michael F. Ingham, Hannah N. Inouye, Ellica C. Moore, Jesse D. Moore, Daniel J. Riley, Kevin L. Skenes and Laura A. Suppa, all of Evans.

 

Blake Underwood (left), a junior at Westminster Schools, was presented the Congressional Gold Medal Award at U.S. Rep. John Barrow's office in Augusta. The medal is the highest honor bestowed on young people by Congress. Blake is the son of Kathleen and George Hovan, of Martinez.

Chick-fil-A team member earns scholarship

Eric Dewyngaert, of Martinez, has received a $1,000 leadership scholarship to study mass communications at North Greenville College, in Tigerville, S.C.

Scholarship award

David Bradley Schwartz, of Martinez, son of Paul and Jane Schwartz, will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology and has received its highest merit award for freshmen, the President's Scholarship. Schwartz, a Lakeside High School graduate, earned the scholarship for his extracurricular activities, academic achievements and communication skills. He will receive a financial award for four years.

 

Brendan James Thomas of Martinez has been named a Presidential Scholar at the University of Georgia for the spring semester of 2005. Brendan has maintained a 4.0 grade point average during his freshman, sophomore and junior years. He has also been accepted into the Golden Key International Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society for collegiate schools of business. Brendan will serve as President of Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor society, for the 2005-2006 school year. In July, Brendan attended the KPMG Fast Forward Leadership Conference in Hollywood, CA.

Brendan has been accepted to Graduate School for Masters in Accounting at UGA and also received the Caesare & Mary Lavergne Maestri Scholarship for accounting. Brendan, the son of Bill & Ruth Thomas of Martinez, is a 2002 graduate of Evans High School.

Valdosta State University graduate

Mary Ellen McConnel, of Martinez, graduated in the summer from Valdosta State University with a bachelor of arts in English.

Brothers make GSU Dean's List

Brian Murrell, a student at the Medical College of Georgia in the Physicians Assistant Program, made the Dean's List for summer semester. Brian has his master's degree from Georgia Southern University. His brother, Matthew Murrell, made the Dean's List at Georgia Southern University for summer semester. Brian and Matthew are the sons of John and Sandra Murrell, of Martinez. Brian was a 1996 graduate of Lakeside High School and Matthew was a 2001 graduate from Lakeside High.

Agnes Scott College graduate

Shireen Q. Fischer, of Martinez, received a bachelor's degree in biology, magna cum laude,with dean's honor list recognition at Agnes Scott College. Fischer is the daughter of Paul Fischer and Asma Fischer, of Martinez, and is a 2001 graduate of Lakeside High School.

Columbia College grad

Lezettra Dionne Dunn Saunders, of Martinez, graduated in August from Columbia College with a master of education degree in divergent learning.

Central Michigan University graduates

Two students from Columbia County graduated in May from Central Michigan University: Shylonda Y. Minter, of Grovetown, master of science in administration; and, Gabriel V. Warner, of Grovetown, master of science in administration.

 

Thomas Houston has been named a Presidential Scholar for the summer semester at the University of Georgia. Houston, a 2002 graduate of Lakeside High School, is the son of Tom and Kimberly Houston, of Evans.
