While I agree with the people who are against the school calendar as it stands, I have to ask one major question: Where were they 2-3 years ago when they voted on it?
I attend at least half of the school board meetings throughout the year; I go to their Web site at least once a month to see if there are any new "ideas" coming down the road.
I have attended four of the five board members' public forums; as a matter of fact, I was the only parent to show up at the most recent one sponsored by Mildred Blackburn.
Each board member in the past has sponsored a public forum where parents can come in and ask questions, state complaints and have a two-way conversation with board of education members. This is something you cannot do at regular board meetings.
Mike Sleeper is having a public forum meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Greenbrier High. I would like to encourage all these parents who have beefs or questions to show up and let their voices be heard.
Maybe if more people would show an interest in their children's education by coming to these useful forums something positive can get done. And maybe if more parents came to these meetings they would continue to have them.
