Robert J. Ellis III was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Lakeside High School, where he played football and soccer. Ellis has been assigned to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., where he is awaiting orders to flight school. He is the son of Rosemary Ellis, of Nashville, Tenn., and Bob Ellis of Evans.

Furman scholars

Furman University has named the following high school juniors as Furman Scholars. The students, who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and shown interest in attending a liberal arts college, were nominated by their high school college counselors. All the Scholars have a minimum 3.75 grade point average, rank in the top 5 percent of their classes and have strong test scores.

Peel, Augusta Preparatory Day School; and, Guilly R. Rebagay, Augusta Preparatory Day School, all of Martinez.

Furman graduates

 

Michael G. Petrides, son of George and Julia Petrides of Martinez, has completed Naval Officer Cadet School in Pensacola, Fla. Ensign Petrides served as a subcommander and was honored as the outstanding member of his class in academics, military science and physical training. Petrides is a 2005 summa cum laude graduate of Furman University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was on the dean's list his entire college career.

Furman's Dean's List consists of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher on a 4-point system. Nursing award

 

Ryan Gordon Blackburn has become part of Mercer University's Chip Off the Old Block program because his grandfather, Gordon Lamar Hardi, graduated from Mercer University. Blackburn is a graduate of Lakeside High School and plans to study at Mercer's Stetson School of Business and Economics. He is the son of Ernie and Karen Blackburn.

Aja Ryan Reece was honored by Georgia Baptist College in Nursing of Mercer University with the Maternal-Infant Nursing Award sponsored by the Better Birth Foundation. The award is presented to the student in each graduating class who excels in the care of mothers and infants.
