Doctors, lawyers to meet on court

Area doctors and lawyers will face off on the court in a charity basketball game at Greenbrier High School on Friday.

The game, which is sponsored by Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Services, will be held at 7 p.m. at 5114 Riverwood Parkway in Evans. Admission costs $5 at the door; children 10 and younger attend for free.

"They have a good time out there," Phyllis Salyer, a secretary for Rape Crisis, said about the 12th annual event.

Proceeds from the game will benefit Rape Crisis, and the funds will allow the agency to continue to provide services in the area, Salyer said.

Rape Crisis is a grant-funded, nonprofit agency that assists survivors of sexual assault. Some of the services offered are: a 24-hour crisis hot line, support groups, short-term counseling, community education programs, and children preventive programs.

At Friday's game, a team of doctors called the "sawbones" and lawyers dubbed the "jawbones" will get to see how high their opponents can jump.

At last year's event, Salyer said, the nonprofit group raised $8,000 to $9,000.

This year, Salyer said she hopes to exceed that amount.

"We would like to raise $10,000. Every little bit counts," she said.
