Luau set to attract new members

Posted: Sunday, July 31, 2005

The Fort Gordon Service Club will accept new members at a luau Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Family Outreach Center behind Woodworth Library at Fort Gordon.

"This is a kickoff for our membership drive," said Joanie Bryant, the second vice president of the club.

Formerly the Enlisted Wives Club and the Officers Wives Club, the Fort Gordon Service Club is open to active-duty military members, spouses, retirees and civilians affiliated with Fort Gordon.

Members of the organization are involved in different types of events.

On the service end of its mission, club members help raise money for scholarships and grants to area charities by staffing a thrift shop on post and playing host to two flea markets each year.

In the coming year, the club will organize outreach events such as singing Christmas carols and exchanging cookies at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center during the holidays and making holiday cards at an October meeting.

A focus of this year's agenda is education.

Plans are to form small groups interested in quilting, scrapbooking, reading and parenting.

The luau will be an opportunity for prospective members to find out more about these areas.

The event is free, but Bryant said she needs to know how many people are coming in order to have enough food. For more information, call 863-2931.
