Columbia County's main library will shut its doors this week to count books.

Gibbs Memorial Library, at 325 N. Belair Road in Evans, will be closed Tuesday through Saturday for inventory. The library's regular schedule will resume Aug. 8.

"The inventory will give us an accurate count of what we actually have in the library. It will also let us know what's missing and what has circulated," said Kathy Hebert, Gibbs' library manager.

It will also allow library workers to update the library's catalog.

"For example, there may have been some old items that were checked out in the old system that were put into the new system," Hebert said. "We believe that we have them on the shelf, but we can't locate them. So when we run these reports after doing the inventory, it will give us an accurate count of all of our items that we have in our holding."

The inventory also is necessary to allow library personnel to weed out items that have not circulated since the state adopted the Web catalog PINE - Public Information Network for Electronic Services - in 2001.

In March, Gibbs will close and all of its items will be relocated to the county's new 32,000-square-foot library, under construction next to the Columbia County Government Complex on Ronald Reagan Drive in Evans.
