Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue and state school Superintendent Kathy Cox will be the special guests at the Columbia County Republican Party meeting Saturday.
The meeting, which will include a fish camp breakfast, will be held at 9 a.m. in the dining hall at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Evans. Tickets cost $25 and will not be available the day of the event.
Lee Muns, Columbia County's Republican Party chairman, said the event will feature a question-and-answer segment for the governor, who will be the guest speaker.
"I'm sure he's going to be discussing his re-election next year and probably addressing some issues with education, etc.," Muns said.
Muns said he thinks Perdue and Cox are visiting because of the county's contribution to state officials.
"Both of them realize that Columbia County is becoming more and more important to anybody who is considering on running for statewide office," he said. "Columbia County has a strong fundraising base for statewide campaigns. That puts us in the upper echelon, to being important to candidates, or either current officeholders for statewide offices."
Muns said he hopes the meeting will spark a deeper interest among Republicans and get them excited about issues that Republicans are "aggressively" trying to address.
Besides a Columbia County visit, the governor also will be in McDuffie County on Saturday for a Thomson-McDuffie Saturday With Sonny event from 7:15 to 8:45 a.m.
"Saturdays with Sonny is a personal initiative of Gov. Sonny Perdue," said Shane Hix, the governor's spokesman.
"It provides Gov. Perdue with the opportunity to hear directly from citizens about important state and community issues."
Residents will have five minutes with the governor to share their thoughts, discuss an issue or ask a question.
The meetings will not be open to media or registered lobbyists. Up to four people are allowed to meet with the governor at one time. Hix said that in the past, the discussions have covered "everything from adoptions, the Department of Family and Children Services, education, budget concerns and health care, to specific local and community issues."
To meet with Perdue, residents must reserve an appointment by calling the governor's Constituent Services hot line at (404) 656-1776.
"The appointment slots usually fill up in the first hour; we have a heavy response," Hix said. "However, no phone calls for appointments will be accepted before Monday."
Participants are asked to arrive no earlier than 7 a.m. Saturday. In order to meet with Perdue, participants must have a scheduled appointment and identification.
