Permits will end student traffic

Residents living in the Evanston neighborhood in Evans most likely won't have to worry about Evans High School students parking in front of their house this school year.

A new ordinance, which already has received a first-reading approval by county commissioners, is set to establish a no-parking zone in the area for residents, allowing them to park in their neighborhood streets but preventing Evans High students from doing so.

The ordinance, which is set to have a second and final reading at the Columbia County Commission's next meeting Tuesday, would allow residents in the Evanston neighborhood and other neighborhoods surrounding Evans High to obtain a hanging mirror tag that would allow them to park in their street.

This past school year, some nearby residents of Evans High had complained that students were parking in their neighborhood instead of paying for a parking permit to park at the school.

Some students, however, have said they weren't able to get a parking permit because they were told they had tried to get one too late in the school year.

Chris Bland, Columbia County's traffic engineer, said the plan is to have the no-parking zone in effect by the start of the school year.

"We're going to as very closely as we can align with that,'' he said. "... That's certainly our goal.''

Bland said that the parking situation seemed to get worse in the latter part of this past school year.

"So, I'm hoping we have a little bit of a window. At least we've got everything in motion to do it. And again, that's certainly our goal is to try to get it as close to that school opening date as possible,'' he said.

A student parking permit at Evans High costs $10. That fee will increase to $15 for the 2005-06 school year.
