No longer can Columbia County students find their bus route listed in the school system's annual newsletter. Instead, the information will come directly to their home.
"Every student that is registered with a school in Columbia County will receive a postcard," said Dewayne Porter, the transportation director for the Columbia County School System. "Even if two or three students all live in the same household, they'll all receive an individual postcard."
The information on the postcards will include bus numbers, drivers' names, the location of the bus stop, the approximate time of arrival and the approximate time of drop-off in the afternoon. Each postcard will also ask pupils to be at the bus stop 10 minutes early.
Using EduLog computer software, which keeps a database of home addresses for each student in the county, transportation officials were able to determine the most efficient route for each student, Porter said.
Porter called the printed schedules in the newsletter too complex. He said the postcards make it easier for students, and their parents, to understand where they need to be and when.
"We're hoping to cut down on some confusion with the postcards," he said.
Bus route information also will be available on the school system's Web site, www.ccboe.net, at the Back to School Festival on Saturday at Lakeside High School, at open houses and on The News-Times' Web site, www.news timesonline.com.
"We will have drivers at the schools' open houses, and they will be there to assist parents and students with bus information," Porter said.
Unregistered students won't receive a postcard, because they are not entered into the system, Porter said. Those students should contact the transportation office at 541-0657 or attend open house.
"They will have to call us directly or go to their school's open house," Porter said. "All the drivers know the area well enough that they can direct a new student to the correct driver for their route."
