Event was big success because of supporters

Posted: Sunday, July 24, 2005

The fourth annual A.B.'s Sportsline Tournament of Wishes was a huge success this year.

The event was put together by former Jones Creek Golf Club General Manager Brent Smithers and me. The first year, we threw the event together at the last minute, but still managed to raise more than $10,000.

The tournament has grown by leaps and bounds since then. The past two years we managed to donate nearly $50,000 to our cause, the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

This terrific organization grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses, and you might be shocked to learn that nearly 40 kids will have wishes granted this year in the Augusta area alone.

I must admit to be overjoyed that this year, thanks to huge support from our sponsors and volunteers, we will be able to donate more than $30,000 when the final tabulations are complete. To everyone who had a hand in our golf tournament or auction, thank you so much, and I look forward to seeing you next year.

Belcher performs in front of family

Former Augusta Christian Baseball Star Jordan Belcher continues to turn heads in the Cincinnati Reds organization. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder is playing in Billings, Mont., with the Reds Rookie League team, the Billings Mustangs. Belcher is having a solid season, and his season got even better during a recent visit from his parents.

During a four-game stretch, Belcher was 8 for 16 at the plate, with a home run, three doubles and a whopping 11 RBI. On Monday night, Belcher was 3 for 5 with a homer, two doubles and 6 RBI. He currently leads Billings with 21 RBI on the season.

Morris & Thornhill to play in prospect game

I must apologize to rising Greenbrier seniors Tim Thornhill and Cal Morris. Because of an error on my part, their names were left off the list of players participating in the CSRA Prospect Showcase coming up this Saturday. Both will participate for Team Georgia in the nine-inning game at Lake Olmstead Stadium, which will feature the area's premier rising senior baseball players.
