Players use camp to pass on game skills

Augusta Christian players recently witnessed speed they thought was only possible on a race track or at a track meet.

Football teams from throughout the area attended a football camp at Augusta Christian. The four-week camp was sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. "You can't put a price on what the kids learn at these," said Eric Parker, coach at Laney High School.[

The Lions held the annual CSRA Fellowship of Christian Athletes passing league at Pride Valley.

As a result, ACS scrimmaged North Augusta, Laney and Aquinas, among others, during the four-week camp that took place on Tuesday nights and featured teams from all over the area.

"You can't measure how much this will help us," said Lions coach Bruce Lane. "We don't see the speed and athleticism that some of the schools have in the (South Carolina Independent Schools Association). This is something that will really help us in the long run."

The seven-on-seven camp provides an opportunity for area teams to see how players respond to game-like situations. Some schools, such as Laney, didn't bring many upperclassmen because they want to give experience to the younger players.

"We will go to about three of these passing camps this week," said Laney coach Eric Parker. "You can't put a price on what the kids learn at these. We pass the ball a lot, so it is a huge benefit to us. Plus, we lost nearly all of our skill players, so we can break the new guys in."

Greenbrier graduated all but one receiver and used the camp to help quarterback Sean Gray become familiar with his new receivers.

"The more opportunities you get to have your players work together, the better," said Greenbrier coach Mickey Derrick. "This camp is a great opportunity to get some extra work in for the kids."

The passing league ended June 28.

"We can just hope to take a lot from this camp and apply it to the season," Lane said.
