University of the South graduate

Laura Alison Walters, of Martinez, was recently awarded a bachelor of arts degree in theater arts at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn. Walters is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick T. Walters.

Georgia Commission honor

Brooke Fillgrove, a seventh-grade pupil at Lakeside Middle School, was recently honored by the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust at the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, held at the state Capitol in Atlanta. Brooke won third place in the middle school division of the writing contest.

Honor society inductees

Two Martinez residents were recently inducted into the Samford University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Samford's highest honor society, Phi Kappa Phi, recognizes superior achievement in all academic disciplines. Members include undergraduate and graduate students. New members from Martinez are: Christy Jeanne Adkins, a biology major who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Adkins; and Jessica Marie Colbert, an accounting major who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Colbert.

Georgia Southern scholarship recipients

Georgia Southern University recently awarded the following Columbia County residents scholarships: Sarah Kavsak, a senior mathematics education major of Evans, received a $500 J.C. Hunter Memorial Scholarship; Alyse Kerlin, of Grovetown, was awarded a $1,000 Jim and Ruth Miller Scholarship; Jonathan K. Meeks, of Evans, was awarded a $1,500 Gulfstream Aerospace Engineering Endowment; and Michael Mitchell, of Evans, was awarded a $500 Hugh E. Darley Sr. Technology Scholarship.

Rebecca Katherine Croft, of Evans, recently graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a bachelor of fine arts degree in metals and jewelry. Croft is the daughter of William Croft.
