As reported 48 years ago in the pages of The Columbia News, Thursday, June 6, 1957:

Wreck kills one; six are injured

One person was killed and six others seriously injured at 4 p.m. on Saturday in a head-on collision of two vehicles about 4 miles north of Appling, the Thomson station of the Georgia Highway Patrol reported.

Claude Luke, 20, of Appling, was listed dead upon arrival. He was the driver and sole occupant of an automobile that smashed head-on into a pickup truck on U.S. 221. Five of the occupants of the pickup were admitted into University Hospital for treatment. Lillie Garnett and Pearl McClattey were admitted for surgery. All suffered lacerations of the scalp and arms.
