This past week, a sign bearing retailer names such as La-Z-Boy furniture store, pet store PETCO, Office Max, Babies "R" Us and discount apparel stores Ross Dress for Less and Marshalls was erected at the shopping center, which is under construction on Washington Road.

Frank Mullins, the developer for the 480,000-square-foot shopping center called Mullins Crossing, said he expects the new center will generate a lot of sales tax dollars for Columbia County.

"It's going to keep a lot of money in Columbia County, and it's also going to bring some money in Columbia County that's not already here," he said. "Augusta is definitely a market that has a lot of growth, and Columbia County is a key part of that."

Mullins said the Evans Town Center area is attracting more attention to the county and making room for potential development in the future.

In the fall, Target and Kohl's are expected to open their doors.

Mullins said the remaining retailers will open shortly thereafter through the first quarter of 2006.

"There may be a few stragglers," he said about additional retailers. "But they won't all open simultaneously. It'll stair-step through."

Although the shopping center will be somewhat similar to Augusta Exchange in west Richmond County, Mullins said the facade of the Mullins Crossing stores will have a different architectural design.

"It's much more stringent and the landscape is heavier," he said. "So, it's going to be a little different from the Target center (in Richmond County) in that respect."
