A Martinez firefighter was taken to a hospital Friday after suffering second-degree burns while extinguishing a blaze at a Martinez home. John Franklin was taken to Doctors Hospital after a burning roof at 260 Callaway Drive collapsed on top of him as he attempted to douse a fire in the attic. Franklin was treated and released the same day, a hospital spokeswoman said. A preliminary investigation determined the fire was started by a lightning strike from a Friday morning thunderstorm. The homeowner was not at the scene at the time of the fire.
