The 20 Columbia County rising sophomores and juniors gathered for a reception at the Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Evans on May 12 to meet and discuss their goals as a member of Youth Leadership.
"I think it's great to have some fun while learning more about my community than I can learn from my parents or at school," said John Harlan, a 16-year-old sophomore at Greenbrier High School.
The students were chosen based on the strength of applications and interviews. Teen members of Youth Leadership represent Evans, Lakeside, Greenbrier and Augusta Christian high schools.
As part of Youth Leadership, they will partake in many day-long events designed to make them better leaders and more socially aware. Activities include a ropes/cope session, a history session and a canoe trip on the Augusta Canal, a law enforcement session held at the sheriff's office and jail, a healthcare session at a hospital, a business and industry session and a government session held at the state capital.
"It gives them experience and the opportunity to find out what's out there," said Carolyn Tynan, the chairwoman of the committee overseeing Youth Leadership. "Whatever they put into it, they'll get out of it."
