Democrats will enforce sign law, and urge Republicans to do likewise

On May 4, the Columbia County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of amending the county sign ordinance to allow year-round display of campaign signs. In the name of free speech and the First Amendment, these signs, on private property, may now grace our community forever.

Citizens concerned with keeping Columbia County clean and beautiful pleaded with the Board of Commissioners not to accept the change. However, the die was cast and the vote was in. Praise the Constitution and pass the yard signs.

Actually, the solution to the problem is rather simple. As chairman of the Columbia County Democratic Party, I will ask all Democratic candidates to pledge that they will live up to the spirit of the nullified sign ordinance.

All candidates will be asked to remove their yard signs within five days after the completion of an election. In addition, our candidates will be instructed that campaign signs should only be placed on private property and never on the right-of-way.

We challenge our good friends of the Republican Party to do the same.

Scott C. Nichols
